I think the best way is to simply search for ‘the best ? app for android’. The question mark is whatever you are looking for be a word processor, keyboard, or photo retouching app.
With these lists you cad then go to the market and not only try them all but try the ones others have also downloaded.
Don’t be afraid to try. If you don’t like them or there is something you would like changed in them you can either write to the developer and make a suggestion (90% answer in my experience and many implement good suggestions.
Also fill your RSS reader with feeds from every Internet posted Android mag you can find.
I have had my SGSI for almost two years now and have probably had over 1000 apps installed! (not simultaneously).
I now have a SMART phone.
    Happy hunting :D

David, you have some good suggestions. I would add a bit of caution to your comment though. While searching for and trying out new apps, I would take a few precautions because some can be bad and even introduce you to malware, etc.

When you find an app you want to try, I would suggest going straight to the rating section and see how many users give it a good rating. The safest apps to try come suggested by large, well known websites and have been downloaded and rated many many times with good scores.

Another reason for this is that many apps ask for permissions and if you can’t trust the developers, etc., you may want to move on.

You can also have security software installed on your phone in case you get an evil app by accident. Having it as backup can give you some reassurance.

    Just my two cents.

I’ve found a good way to find great apps is to check some of the app directory sites like AppBrain, AndroidAndMe, and AndroidTapp, to name a few. Generally, I think searching is kind of tedious unless you already are searching for something specific. There’s also a lot of Android forums that talk about new apps and what the best, must have apps are.
